Throughout the various translations of Hokuto no Ken into English, one of the most confusing things is the way characters' titles are translated. Often very vague and generic terms like "Emperor" and "King" are thrown around for multiple characters. The original manga uses many specific terms.
- Ken'ō (拳王 King of Fists): Used by Raoh
- King: Shin
- Kōtei (皇帝 Emperor): Used by Aisin-Gioro Puyi, the ancient ruler of the Nanto Rokusei Ken, and the ruler that forbade Rakan Niō Ken.
- Kōtei (光帝 Emperor of Light): Used by Baran
- Rashō (羅将 Asura General): Used by Han, Hyoh, and Kaioh
- Seitei (聖帝 Holy Emperor): Used by Souther
- Shō (将 General): Used by each of the Nanto Rokusei Ken
- Sōtoku (総督 Viceroy): Used by Jakō
- Tentei (天帝 Emperor of Heaven): Used by Lui, and occasionally Lin.
