Zhāng Dàyán (章 大厳 Shō Daigen) (c.v. Seizo Kato) was the master of the Hokuto Sōka Ken style and father of the Honghua Hui boss, Zhang Lieshan. Having married Zhang Taiyan's mother, he was led to believe Tàiyán was his child when in actuallity he was the son of his wife's previous husband. Years later, when Dàyán learned the truth, he was enraged and his wife took her own life on the condition Dàyán spare Tàiyán's. Noticing the young Tàiyán's talent, he adopted him and trained him in Sōkaken. Eventually, Dàyán passed on the title of Sōkaken Master to Tàiyán after being defeated him. However, Dàyán then died as a result of injuries from the fight.
