Nicknamed "Grannie", she is the woman that raised the young Bat among other orphans. Although, she may not seem to get along with Bat, the two are very fond of each other in reality. She tries to dig out a well at her village, but isn't successful until Kenshirō arrives to break off the rock plate that's blocking the water. After Kenshirō leaves, Jackal attacks the village takes Toyo and the orphans captive. Kenshirō comes back and rescue them, but she dies from the stab wound given by Jackal. Before dying Bat finally shows his true feeling to Toyo by calling her "mother", she passed away with a smile on her face.

In the movie adaptation Raoh Den: Junai no Shō, she is renamed Martha (マーサ, Māsa), and protects her orphans from Souther's army. However, unlike in the manga, she is not killed.
