Throughout the various translations of Hokuto no Ken into English, one of the most confusing things is the way characters' titles are translated. Often very vague and generic terms like "Emperor" and "King" are thrown around for multiple characters. The original manga uses many specific terms.
- Chiō (智王ギオン King of Wisdom): Used by Gion
- Gaō (我王 Ātman King): Gaoh
- Ken'ō (拳王 King of Fists): Used by Raoh

- Kiō (鬼王Demon King): Used by Goram
- Kōtei (皇帝 Emperor): Used by Aisin-Gioro Puyi, the ancient ruler of the Nanto Rokusei Ken, and the ruler that forbade Rakan Niō Ken.
- Kōtei (光帝 Emperor of Light): Used by Baran
- Meiō (冥王 King of Hades): Meioh
- Rashō (羅将 Asura General): Used by Han, Hyoh, and Kaioh
- Ryūtei (龍帝 Dragon Emperor): Used by Amon
- Seitei (聖帝 Holy Emperor): Used by Souther
- Shō (将 General): Used by each of the Nanto Rokusei Ken
- Sōtoku (総督 Viceroy): Used by Jakō
- Tentei (天帝 Emperor of Heaven): Used by Lui, and occasionally Lin.
