The Hokuto no Ken manga by Buronson and Tetsuo Hara was adapted into two animated television series produced by Toei Animation. The original series, simply titled Hokuto no Ken (北斗の拳), lasted 109 episodes, which aired on Fuji TV from 11 October 1984 to 5 March 1987, adapting the first 136 chapters of the original manga. A sequel series, Hokuto no Ken 2, took over the previous series' time slot and lasted 43 episodes, airing from 12 March 1987 to 18 February 1988, which adapts chapters 137 to 210 (the remainder of the manga was not adapted).

The original opening and ending themes for the series up to episode 82 are Ai o Torimodose!! (愛をとりもどせ!!, "Taking Back Love") and Yuria... Eien ni (ユリア...永遠に, "Yuria... Eternally"), both performed by the band Crystal King. From episodes 83 to 109, the opening and ending themes are changed to Silent Survivor and Dry Your Tears by Kodomo Band. For the Hokuto no Ken 2 portion of the series (episodes 110-152), the opening and ending themes are Tough Boy and Love Song by Tom Cat.

Fist of the North Star

Part 1

This portion of the series adapts Chapters 1-25 of the original manga, adapting the story from the beginning to the battle between Kenshiro and Devil's Rebirth. The order of the events and how they transpire were changed in the anime, so that the final battle between Kenshiro and Shin does not occur until the very end

Shortly afterwards, a biker gang attacks the village and their leader Zeed takes Lin hostage. Ken breaks out of his cell and defeats Zeed, rescuing Lin. Ken leaves the village with Bat following him, while Lin stays behind. 2 "The Deadly Fist of Lingering Regret! - The Future is Sighted in the Barren Desert!/The Fist of Lingering Regret and Certain Death!! The Future is sighted in the Barren Wasteland!!"
"Hissatsu Zankaiken!! Fumō no Kōya ni ashita o mita!!" (必殺残悔拳!! 不毛の荒野に明日をみた!!) 1984-10-18 Ken rescues an old man named Smith from Spade, a member of the Four Jacks working for the King organization. The old man seeks to deliver a bag of rice seeds to his village, hoping to harvest them for the future. Ken and Bat take Smith to his village, unaware that Spade and his men are following them. Spade, who lost his eye during his initial encounter with Ken, attacks the village and kills Smith in retaliation. Unable to rescue Smith, an angry Ken kills Spade with a technique that makes their victim feel remorse before dying. After the battle, Ken plants Smith's seed over his grave. 3 "In a City Without Light, a Lone Fist Burns! - Furious Death of the Five Exploding Fingers! / In the City Without Light, a Lone Fist Burns! "Hikari-naki machi ni koken ga moeta! Bakusatsu Goshi Retsudan" (光なき街に孤拳が燃えた! 爆殺五指烈弾) 1984-10-25 Bat spots Lin in a truck full of captured villagers being taken to the village of Dorado, which is occupied by the King gang. On their way there, Ken encounters two of remaining Jacks, Diamond and Club, who are torturing the villagers of Dorado. With Bat's help, Ken is reunited with Lin. 4 "The Bloody Cross Attacks! - Secret Technique, Death by Soft Strikes! / Attack the Bloody Cross! The Secret Technique, Death by Soft Strikes."
"Braddi Kurosu o ute!! Hiken Jūhazan" (ブラッディクロスを撃て!! 秘拳·柔破斬) 1984-11-01 Ken learns that the prisoners that were transported with Lin were taken to a prison camp in a nearby valley. Ken manages to break the imprisoned villagers free, but during their escape they're all slaughtered in an ambush led by Mr. Heart, the last of the Four Jacks. While Heart's excess flesh proves resistant to his attacks, Ken eventually uses a techniques which penetrates through his body. From his battle with Heart, Ken learns an important clue which reveals to him the identity of King. 5 "Can the Flames of Love Burn in Hell? - You Are Already Dead!! / Can the Flames of Love Burn in Hell? "Jigoku ni saku ka ai no honō. Omae wa mō shindeiru!!" (地獄に咲くか愛の炎·おまえはもう死んでいる!!) 1984-11-08 Having learned that King is none other than his old friend turned nemesis Shin, Ken remembers how a year ago Shin defeated him in combat, engraved the seven scars on his chest, and kidnapped his fiancee Yuria. Ken arrives at a local castle where Shin was staying, but only finds Shin's right-hand man Joker, who reveals that Shin and his gang has already left the castle, taking Yuria with him. Joker escapes and sets the castle ablaze with Ken inside, but Ken manages to escape, swearing to find Shin. 6 "Search Order from Satan. - Find the Man with the Seven Scars. / The Devil's Hit list. Find the Man With the 7 Scars!"
"Akuma no tehaisho. Nanatsu no kizu no otoko o nerae!" (悪魔の手配書 七つの傷の男を狙え!) 1984-11-15 Ken and his friends arrive at an oasis under the surveillance of God's Army, a fanatical military group composed of former special forces members. Ken becomes a target for this group after Ken kills one of the security officers in battle. 7 "Villains! - Shall We Have a Countdown to Death? / Villains! How About Counting Down to Your Own Death?!"
"Akutō domo! Shi e no Byōyomi yatte miru kai" (悪党ども! 死への秒よみやってみるかい) 1984-11-22 The members of God's Army conduct a full-scale search of the oasis for Kenshiro. When the search team begins to execute random villagers to lure him, Ken allows himself to be captured in order to infiltrate their training facility. "Keiraku Hikō o tsuke! However, Duran's former partner-in-crime, Dante, is hired by Shin to hunt down Ken. "Dai-ichi-bu kanketsu - Yuria towa ni.... Soshite Shin yo!" (第一部完結 - ユリア永遠に...· そしてシンよ!) 1985-03-21 With Southern Cross left in ruins following Barcom's revolt, Shin is left by himself in his own palace, protected by the few followers he still has left. Ken confronts Shin for the first time in a year and defeats him, only to learn that Yuria has already taken her own life.

"Jaakunaru mono yo! Toki omae no kokoro wa kusatteiru!!" (邪悪なる者よ! トキ·お前の心は腐っている!!) 1985-07-11 Kenshiro confronts Toki in his lair at the Village of Miracles. However, Ken is unconvinced that his adversary is the real Toki, until he reveals the scar on his back, from which Toki gained while rescuing a young Kenshiro in the past. 36 "I Have no Past to Look Back on! - Just My Hatred for Evil That Will Destroy Toki! / There Is No Looking Back! "Furikaeru kako wa nai! Tada aku o nikumi Toki o utsu!!" "Kyōaku no Densetsu! Kasandora no mon ga ima hirakareru!!" "Jigoku kara no yobigoe! Rei omae wa Shichōsei o mitaka!!" (地獄からの呼び声! レイお前は死兆星を見たか!!) 1985-10-10 Rei arrives at Mamiya's village and rescues Lin. He confronts the leader of Ken-oh's Invasion Division, who tries to use Airi as a distraction. But Airi, spurred on by Lin's courage, gains the strength to fight for herself again. Rei goes on to defeat the Division leader, only to come face to face with none other than Ken-oh himself. 47 "The Nanto Dance of Death! I'll Give my Life for the Sake of Love!!"

"Shini iku no ka Rei! Ima otoko wa koko made utsukushii!!" (死に行くのかレイ! 今·男はここまで美しい!!) 1985-12-12 Yuda and his gang arrive at the village and takes Mamiya captive in order to challenge Rei to a match. Yuda reveals that he has harbored resentment towards Rei ever since they've trained together, due to the fact that Rei's graceful Nanto Suichōken is more admired than Yuda's own Nanto Kōkakuken style. 56 "Beautiful Warriors, Rei vs. Yuda! A Man's Passage Needs No Tears!"
"Utsukushiki kenshi Rei tai Yuda! Otoko no hanamichi ni namida wa iranu!!" (美しき拳士レイVSユダ! 男の花道に涙はいらぬ!!) 1985-12-19 Yuda's henchmen causes a flood in the village that makes Rei stuck to the ground, giving Yuda a slight upper hand. However, Rei overcomes this and defeats Yuda with his ultimate technique. Yuda accepts his defeat and recognizes Rei as a stronger and more beautiful man. Yuda dies, but Rei himself does not have much time to live either. 57 "End of Part Two: Farewell, Rei! Heroic Legend Will be Told Throughout The Ages!"
"Saraba Rei! Jidai wa yūsha no densetsu o kataritsugu!!" (さらばレイ! 時代は勇者の伝説を語り継ぐ!!) 1985-12-26 In his last moment of life, Rei secludes himself from his family and friends and reminisces his adventures with Ken and co. while awaiting death. Although the series has never been fully released on VHS in Japan, Toei released three hour-long "digest" episodes on VHS during the late 1980s, composed of clips of episodes from Chapters 1, 2, and 4 of the first series. The complete series has been collected on DVD in Japan, in a boxed collection known as the Super Premium Box and in 26 individually released discs containing 5-6 episodes per volume. A three volume DVD series, the Kyūkyoku Retsuden series, which features key episodes of the series. Toei later produced an HD Remaster Edition of the Hokuto no Ken DVD set, which was released on March 28, 2008.

English

The first 36 episodes were licensed to Manga Entertainment and released in English dubbed and subtitled formats on VHS and DVD. Manga Entertainment initially released the series in eight VHS volumes spanning only 24 episodes in 1999 and later released all 36 episodes in five DVD volumes in 2003. The English dub of the show features a new soundtrack provided by Reinforced Records and voice acting by Animaze. The original opening and ending sequences were replaced by in-house versions produced by Manga Entertainment with music by Mike Egan. The dubbed version aired on Showtime Beyond in the US and on Channel 4 and the Sci-Fi Channel in the UK.

On May 2008, Toei began releasing English-subtitled episodes of the TV series on the internet. All 152 episodes are available on various video streaming services.

Discotek is currently planning to release the complete TV series in North American in four different DVD sets.

Reception

A reviewer of DVD Vision Japan stated that the English voice acting was "terrible, even for an early dub" and compared David Lucas' performance as Shin unfavorably to his role as Spike Spiegel in Cowboy Bebop. The same reviewer also states that the music by Mike Egan is mediocre. Mike Toole of Anime Jump proclaimed that the drum n' bass soundtrack is "occasionally nice, but usually just obtrusive". Chadwick Ngan of EX Anime wrote that the "American voice actors' efforts are commendable" and that the new opening and ending themes "aren't bad, but nothing to get excited about either."
